Implementation of the University Open Journal System is crucial in supporting the University research initiatives, increasing research visibility and accessibility of research output globally in addition to enhancing University ranking and collaboration.

The University has developed an open journal system to manage institutional journals with an aim of making the research visible globally. However, the progress of implementation of the system has been slow. It is on this basis that the University of Nairobi Library has organized for a follow-up online training on enhancing visibility and promoting the University local journals through implementation of Open Journal System. This is in line with the University vision to provide quality education and training through creation, preservation, integration, transmission and utilization of knowledge. This is also in line with the Vice Chancellor’s five point reform agenda number one on data driven management as an essential area of responsible research. The follow-up online training on “Publishing of Institutional Journals using Open Journal System (OJS)” is scheduled on Friday, February 17, 2023.

The aim of the training is to:

  1. Support implementation of OJS to increase visibility and accessibility of local research globally thus improving university ranking and collaboration.
  2. Promote the University Journal System to encourage researchers to publish their articles in institutional scholarly journals
  3. Promote journal publishing standards and best practices to improve impact factor and citation of institutional journals. 
  4. Make open access publishing a viable option for the faculty members and students to increase readership as well as to contribute to the public good on a global scale.

The training targets Faculty members, Editors, Peer-Reviewers, Administrators, Intellectual property staff, ICT staff, Librarians, Post-Graduate Students, Research Managers and Researchers/authors.

At the end of the training, participants will have knowledge to create and configure a new journal, understand the manuscript tracking system and editorial steps, create a journal issue, establish the submission process, and have an overview of how to manage OJS publishing for their local journals.
